OGONILAND CLEAN UP: MIRAGE OR REALITY

For decades, oil extraction in the Niger Delta region known for its richness in oil has otherwise impacted negatively on the environment, hence the need to set up a Presidential Implementation Committee (PIC) and UNEP (United Nation Environmental Programme) in 2006 to carry out Environmental Assessment Study on it by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The assessment lasted from 2009 to 2011, and the past administration followed up with the UNEP report by establishing Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) specially designed for the take off of the Niger Delta region impacted areas including Ogoniland.
As President Muhamadu Buhari flagged off the Clean up of Ogoniland on June 2nd, 2016 in Bodo, Rivers State where in the habitat has for long been threatened and even to extinction the aquatic life, farmlands destroyed, all forms of air, water and land pollution due to the devastating oil spillage.

The Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv) receiving all the necessary support from The Federal Government of Nigeria (FFG) are to expedite actions to ensure the Ogoniland clean up is not a Mirage but Reality.
